Daciana: A Living Horror Movie

The taste and sight of blood had repulsed Luliana her entire life. Daciana never felt that way. She loved horror movies, hiding under the covers, turning out the lights, and waiting for gore. Her curiosity about how her blood tasted seemed normal. When other children cut their fingers, they sucked it. So, Daciana never saw her intrigued as anything more. What happened that morning was different. She felt hungry. The dreams were vivid, commanding her to drink. To rip open a throat and take what was inside. It promised her an end to pain, to the agony of humanity.

Daciana took to the bathroom, hating how the desire imposed itself on her sister. She hated the trickery of her mind to make her want to harm those she loved. For weeks her mouth felt sore. Patrick blamed the constant vomiting and the lack of help they were getting. Seeing Leticia, Daciana panicked; her clumsy body stumbled downstairs, desperate to escape. Daciana did not want to attack her family, but everything in her body compelled her to do the opposite.

“Drink”, the voice demanded. The pain in her mouth was intense. Two sharp canines forced the stubby human teeth from her mouth. From this moment, everything blurred. Leticia was holding her, a voice warm, cosy and welcoming. Daciana sought comfort and drank her blood. She squeezed Leticia like a tube of toothpaste when you want to annoy someone by pressing the middle. Daciana wanted it.

What kind of monster was she?

Daciana scampered to the corner drawing her knees up. Here was the answer, and it scared her. She wanted to block out the voices. They echoed around her, demanding an explanation. Her dream brought to life at the cost of Leticia. Her body lay limp but not drained. Daciana, despite the chaos, could hear each heartbeat. The steady rhythm of two competent paramedics as they prepared Leticia for transport. A thundering train across the track belonged to Patrick. Luliana’s heart seemed to pause like it was holding its breath, waiting for them to say, ‘She’s Alive’. Leticia was not breathing. Her heartbeat was slow, weak and fading.

Daciana pinched herself, praying she would wake up and Leticia would hug her. But no one wanted to touch her. Patrick comforted Luliana, turning to Daciana and telling her to stay like a dog. Her mind raced, conflicted by the amazement of her self-discovery. The beautiful taste in her mouth, she yearned for it. There would be no going back; blood was giving her life. Daciana could feel the shift inside, no longer weakened by human food. She ran her tongue over her teeth, sharp, pointed, and painless. The suffering she had endured over her fourteen years was over.

Daciana shook those thoughts from her head. To embrace this moment would be careless; she loved Leticia. All she wanted was to take back time, but how would anything be different? Would Luliana or Patrick be the victim of her uncontrolled attack? Daciana looked around the house, the place she called home. A horror movie lived inside her, and it threatened her family. Daciana hugged her knees tighter and her shoulders shaking. Tears soaked into her sweatpants as they absorbed her screams.
