Boston made a point of walking Luliana home every night. He was plucking up the courage to ask her on a date or prom. At least, this is what Luliana played over in her mind. Boston would stop her, take her boba tea, placing it on a nearby wall. He would take her hands in his, soft and warm. The smell of his sandalwood cologne would tease her nose as Boston stepped closer. Luliana imagined him leaning in to whisper in her ear. It was as though it were a secret that he liked her. The question of prom would be for them alone.

Luliana worried she would need to wait until the day before for Boston to ask. She wanted a day out with her friends, picking a colour for Boston to match his tie. What did not help the situation was her father standing on the porch waiting for her. Patrick was suspicious when she did not come home on time. She and Boston would stop at the Thrift store to buy Boba tea and walk for almost an hour to her house. Luliana hated walking, but being with Boston, time and distance was not a factor. Boston bolted for the bus each time they arrived at the gate. Luliana pondered whether her father’s presence was driving away the boy she loved.
Boston took a deep breath as they reached the gate, relieved Patrick was not waiting. He paused and scanned the ground as though looking for something he had lost. The words came out in a mumbled, nervous, and half-spoken fashion. He hoped Luliana would understand, he did not have to repeat them. She waited, tilting her head to hear him better. Boston forced himself to meet her gaze. He wanted her to go to prom with him. Luliana nodded, her hair bouncing with each excited yes. Boston threw back his shoulders, walking away proud. As he reached the end of her wall, he turned back. Luliana watched, confused, as Boston marched back to her. He leaned, hoping neither would change their mind or pull away. When his lips met hers, Luliana froze. It was not the perfect first kiss she anticipated. Their lips did not align, and his lips were dry. Luliana decided it did not matter. Boston let his fingers brush hers as he stepped back. His face beamed, with a smile to rival the Cheshire cat.
Patrick cleared his throat, alerting the couple to his presence. He was still waiting for an introduction to the boy, stealing his daughter’s heart. Boston’s eyes widened in alarm. He muttered something akin to an apology and ran towards his bus stop. Luliana rolled her eyes at Patrick, walking past him into the house. Nothing he could say would dampen her mood.

Boston kissed her. Full on lips, hearts pounding, and breath held. Luliana swooned, dropping to the sofa. She would need a dress, a new pair of shoes and a photo opportunity. Boston would need a tie to match the colour she chose. Luliana sat up. Someone needed to teach her how to dance. The thought she might step on his toes brought panic to the happy occasion.
Patrick laughed, but deep inside, he felt the sadness. Her heart no longer belonged to him. Daciana had already ceased to be his child, but Luliana still let him be her protector. Patrick wanted Luliana to need him. Leticia rested a hand on his shoulder. She felt the growing distance of a child spreading their wings. Luliana seemed to be ready to leave when the time came. Patrick and Leticia knew they never would.
