Daciana: Teenage Vampire

Leticia slammed her book. It left her hand with such force as to draw the attention of Casimir. It silenced his conversation with Patrick. The vampire tutor was stepping back from his teachings. He remained incapable of forcing Daciana to leave her family. Or the freedom she believed staying offered. Daciana could feed on her victims and tend to their wounds. She showed no signs of developing her hypnosis further. The disappointment in his voice chilled Leticia. Why did it not scare Patrick that Daciana could manipulate someone’s mind? She could compel them to behave inconsistent with their true self. It was wrong to permit any creature that power over another being. She longed for the life before Vampires were real. They were scary stories her village elders told to encourage children to behave. Daciana bit Leticia, a mark never forgotten and forever felt. Leticia faced a death sentence as her ankles swelled. She grew breathless at rest. Her heart no longer held a consistent rhythm. It fell rapid and irregular, but she allowed Daciana to stay. Their daughter posed a risk to everyone around her. She and Patrick were ill-equipped to deal with the raging hormones of a teenage vampire.

If Casimir was unwilling to be upfront about Daciana, Leticia knew it would be down to her. Patrick refused to acknowledge the harm Daciana could do to the family. He wanted to pretend Daciana was still his little girl. He ignored how she spent her money on tattoos and late-night parties. Daciana exclaimed it was her body, and since she was to die, she needed power over the life she had. Explaining how her death was not the end fell on deaf ears. Worse, Casimir seemed impressed by her abilities but this irritated the situation further. Daciana had no interest in becoming the Ministry’s puppet.

Casimir skirted the topic. He wanted Daciana to develop, and he could see her potential. The minute improvements signalled her growth as a formidable force. Daciana resisted his training, at least in his presence. The world was unlucky. She used her hypnosis to gain access to the minds of her victims. The artist had been her first triumphant use of power. She showed him a forged ID, a cheap ‘do it yourself’ card she brought online. The artist, unfooled by this effort, attempted to dismiss Daciana. Their error was when captivated by her eyes. Daciana lured the artist into a false world. Their actions altered to see the ID as truth. When the needle pressed into the skin, Daciana felt it pinch. She flinched as the initial intensity was overwhelming. She struggled to keep her voice soft and dreamy, dropping into silence as the pain clawed its way into her voice. Any breaks in the trance would free the artist and Daciana would face eviction from the studio. Unsuccessful trances are a form of impotence to the vampire. The resulting anxiety immunises the human from manipulative control.

Leticia trembled in the presence of Casimir, his eyes cold and focused. The marks on her neck throbbed, and her heart rate skipped. Her palms were clammy, but these words, even if they were her last, needed saying. Daciana showed a complete disregard for life. She drained her victims and left them weak and confused. There were reports in the paper of a local pandemic of teens suffering short bouts of fatigue and amenia. Their daughter, Casimir’s charge, was out of control. Her desire for blood was more than the three of them could control. Casimir wanted to step back because Daciana refused to play his mind games. He needed to distance himself from the chaos Daciana would bring and the blame he would share.

Casimir took a step towards Leticia. Despite her fear of him, she stood her ground. He wanted to say she was wrong, but he watched Daciana. The child was hungry. Never sated by one or two humans, she devoured extra plasma packs. Daciana saw the family as a sham, a cruel joke to torment her over what she would never have. Casimir was not her father or sire. He had no power over her. Daciana wanted to live and die on her terms.
