TW: Milly’s Story contains Coercive Behaviour
She felt queasy. The rumbling stomach came soon after the wedding. Her breasts were sore, and she whimpered when Hunter pawed. He bore no sympathy, blaming her attractive appearance for his insatiable desire. In his opinion, Milly remained naïve of the effect she had on men. She blamed herself and the abundance of hormones that increased her libido. Hunter seemed to sense it, marking his territory each night. Pregnancy was a when, not if, it would occur. Milly peed on the stick and awaited the result. Fear clenched her; its grip on her life tightened. Hunter had his way, keeping her at home where he believed women belonged. Defeated, Milly found she loved and resented the unborn child with equal measure.

This second pregnancy came with an aversion to meat. The texture, smell, and taste had Milly bent double, regurgitating her meals. When she offered vegetarian dishes, Hunter met her with disdain. He swiped the plate from the table. It reminded her of the toddlers when they were sad, tired or angry. The food splattered across the floor, mixing with the shattered plate. She knelt to clean, filled with remorse for her actions. Hunter grabbed the nape of her neck, pushing her down. Her nose was an inch from the food as his voice bellowed in her ears.
The same threats he used flooded her senses. Milly would do anything to remain with her children. Her hand clutched her stomach as she tried to calm herself. Stress was detrimental to her baby, and they were in the first few months. She reserved tears for when she was alone. Crying in the shower, Milly could blame the puffy redness on getting soap in her eyes. This second pregnancy was his idea. Milly was too scared to refuse or argue. She preferred to lay beneath him, making the noises of satisfaction. Hunter loved to watch her on top, grabbing her assets and grinning. She wondered if she had missed her calling as an actress. After days of running after two energetic toddlers, Milly plastered on a smile, ready to perform.

It sounded callous. Milly berated herself for not wanting the intimacy and another child. A selfish desire to return to work denied Hunter the dream of having a large family. She shared this dream. She hoped it would be further into the future. Being young, Milly wanted to experience the world outside her front door. Hunter scolded her, believing the home was her place. Milly should have been open from the start about her choices. Their relationship required commitment and an understanding of what the future held. Hunter, as the man, provided stability. He did so using her money to further his career and renovate their home to his taste. Milly needed to believe her role meant she should find herself imprisoned. They were not the words he used. Hunter liked soft, reaffirming statements of the importance of women in rearing children. The vital part they played and the strength they gave to the man in their life. Had she preferred to flaunt herself to other men as some women did, an older man was a terrible choice. Hunter made it clear, he was looking for a wife. Her youth made him question the authenticity of her feelings. If he had misjudged, Milly should let him know.
Announcing her pregnancy brought silence from her family. It did not surprise Milly since Hunter crashed Patrick’s wedding by marrying her. She had not contacted her cousins for fear of what they might say. Hunter would not allow this and stand in her defence. He was her protector. When he was angry with her, it would be for good reason. When others were furious with her, it was a slight on them both. Hunter texted from Milly’s phone, a device she longed to have returned. The lack of congratulations fuelled Hunter’s protective need for her. He took pride in reminding Milly how they had forsaken her. They had each other and their children. It was all that mattered.

Hunter released her neck, stroking his hand down her back. It was her fault. He did not want to hurt her, but she made him angry. Milly had power over him, and when he lost control, it was because he cared. Hunter needed Milly to behave. They were to show their children a loving relationship between a man and his wife. He knew this was a foreign concept to her, raised by women. She could, yet, learn if she followed his lead. Milly could feel her hands shaking. The tension in her shoulders and neck was his hand squeezed. All she could manage was a nod. Whatever he asked, Milly promised herself. She would comply, anything to stay with her children.

Thank you. Milly’s story is one of the hardest to write. This is the first of a 4-part arch for her.

It’s so important. So many people don’t understand what someone goes through, why they don’t leave, etc. It’s a complicated subject and it’s nice to see it done well and with respectfulness, too. I am looking forward to reading more about Milly. xo
