Patrick: Adjustments

Patrick added the last coat of warm grey paint. He read it would give a room an airy, light feel, something this windowless basement needed. In the corner, a black framed double bed. Besides was the black table Daciana chose from the online catalogue. White dressers lined the statement burnt orange wall. A television and wooden desk completed the room. It failed to achieve the homey effect he longed to give Daciana, the one they enjoyed in the main house.

It seemed strange to be standing in a room that once belonged to Charlotte. Patrick wanted to protect Daciana as her sensitivity to the sun grew, but he knew she felt abandoned. As though moving her in here was a way to forget her. Patrick wanted to protect both daughters, but Daciana was a danger to everyone. Leticia stayed with Eliza, so there was no comfort. Daciana wanted to know and needed reassurance that Leticia would forgive her. Patrick was unsure if he had and felt guilty because he knew it was not her fault. Once again, he placed the blame on Charlotte and Caleb. Despite messages, neither parent had responded.

Or so he thought.

Patrick greeted the stranger with reluctance and invited him in. The Ministry of Magic heard of Daciana and sent Casimir Quillian to assist in her training. He was like her, a vampire born of a human, his stomach twisted by years of being force-fed human food. His hair was black, falling loose around his shoulders. His ashen brown skin, dull and ageless, emphasised his yellowed-green eyes. They seemed to glow beneath his lashes. He was an inch or two taller than Patrick, with a slender yet toned build. Casimir was, Patrick guessed, an attractive man, at least he had been. The hair flopped over his face to hide a scar on the right side. A burn long since healed etched its way from below the cheekbone upwards. It affected his eyelid and removed a third of his eyebrow. Casimir bore two tribal tattoos on his arms, half hidden by the rolled-up sleeves of his black shirt. Smart black trousers and shoes completed the ensemble but did not detract from what he was, a Vampire.

Casimir observed the wood and steel kitchen with window blinds pulled down permitting minimal light. This situation was not unusual; they took others into the Ministry’s care. Patrick refused to give up on Daciana. He would not be the parent who surrendered his child. Patrick would support Daciana through this transition. If the Ministry objected, the Ministry could mind its business. Casimir looked Patrick over, sensing his fear. The beads of sweat surrounded his receding hairline. His plump and rounded appearance would make him slow. Easy prey for radicals who wanted Daciana, unafraid of what humans might do. Casimir had lived long enough to see their fear. Patrick’s increased breathing and heart rate made the hair stand on the back of Casimir’s neck. Although he had learned to control his blood lust, he would never feel guilty. Teaching this stubborn human a lesson would be worth the temporary imprisonment.

It was a stalemate. Casimir needed Patrick on his side. To persuade him to surrender Daciana when the time came. She would turn on him as Casimir had his mother. The Ministry of Magic agreed to allow Casimir to train Daciana. She would face difficulties within a human environment. The temptation to use her abilities on those around her. To manipulate this small area of humanity. Patrick needed to understand they would deem any attack on humans his responsibility. Casimir would deliver training in the evenings. She would need to study the many volumes of vampire lore. Casimir suggested including plasma fruit in meals. He hoped for her sake it was not too late to at least appear human on the surface.
