Daciana: Whiskey Koa

The bar was a beautiful fire hazard, crafted from straw and wood. The open structure invited in nature with no glass to separate the world from the shelter. Flames illuminated the space outside, offering unnecessary warmth. Daciana regretted keeping the wig on when they landed. The synthetic fibres made her head itch and hot. She imagined the brown locks beneath wet and matted, not the sexy, sultry look she intended. The micro skirt and cropped top did offer some relief. Men would glance over her petite frame with interest, but none gained her attention. Daciana wanted something exciting, a one-night stand on her terms.

As people populated the bar, Daicana became aware of a different set of eyes watching her. She wondered if these glances belonged to a creature of the deep. May be something else that might make a skin crawl and shudder. He had pale skin and messy, curled ginger hair. In contrast to the typical blue eyes associated with gingers, his eyes were brown. They were a dark, sinking, muddy brown. His relaxed clothes agreed with the vibe of Sulani, unlike her own. He had a loose, half-untucked linen shirt and baby pink shorts. He nursed a whisky as he observed the behaviours of those around him. It is how his eyes came to fall on her.

Daciana preferred dark colours as her body temperature dropped lower than humans. The Mai Tai reduced it further, but like snakes, she could absorb warmth from the world. Daciana returned her gaze to the ocean as the man approached. She noted the green aura. It radiated from him, but no human noticed, or if they did, they kept quiet.

He settled beside and ordered two whiskeys, pushing one towards Daciana. She considered the dark liquid, swirling it in the glass. The first sip was fresh, awakening her taste buds. Her mouth felt excited by the vanilla and caramel, deluding her body into feeling warm. The liquid swirled in her mouth as she tried to reveal its hidden depths. The aged, earthy oak barrel, with a hint of charcoal floated across her tongue. These finer notes were beautiful, but harsh notes elicited a cough. Daciana clutched her throat, her reaction drawing attention. The man smirked, taking a sip of his, making Daciana wonder if that was the intention. He had figured out she was unique, a vampire hiding amongst the living.

He held out a hand, with Koa being his preferred name. She was, to him, a curiosity, sitting for hours without food and company. Her arrival in Sulani was late evening. The frequent glances at her phone implied she was checking the time or awaiting a call. Since signal service was intermittent, he guessed the former. Daciana felt an unease with Koa, as he seemed to have been observing her since she arrived. She, meanwhile, had not noticed him until later.

Koa stepped away from the bar, pausing to offer a silent invitation. As they stepped out beneath the stars, his skin colour changed, like peeling an apple in reverse. The green had a yellowish tone in the moonlight. His irises flooded the whites, drawing inspiration from the sky. Daciana smiled. It was not the oceanic meal she fantasised about but an out-of-this-world experience. Koa was accommodating, having read her mind as she sipped her Mai tai. The heady rush she felt upon drinking was from his intrusion into her thoughts. Daciana bared her teeth, sensing a degree of fear. As her teeth grazed his exposed neck, she never promised her bite was pain-free.
