Daciana: Doing My Best

Casimir rebuffed Daciana, sending her hurtling back to the ground. She screamed at him; the pain scorching its way across her back. In this time of peace, vampires had no outlet for their powers. War was a distant memory. The rules governing their hunting of humans meant they needed other opportunities. Sparring amongst themselves was the norm. A brutal game intended to show a vampire’s superiority and gain their respect. Daciana was born into this life but was fighting the battle within herself. Casimir barked orders. He poked her soft stomach and withheld the plasma pack until she obeyed.

Her teenage body was clumsy and uncoordinated. The movies she watched as a child suggested vampiric powers gave instant abilities. They rose from their graves, complete, with superior strength and fighting abilities. Daciana brushed the dirt from her jeans. She had the strength of the straw Casimir pushed through the plastic packet. The smell rushed in through her nostrils as they flared. Her eyes widened, her mouth salivating. This human donor enjoyed chocolate. Beneath the metallic notes was a rich deep nutty aroma of dark chocolate. The blood flowed, creamy and dark red. Casimir squeezed, letting some of the liquid spill. Daciana rushed forwards, ignoring Casimir, his orders to restrain her instincts. A swift roundhouse kick sent Daciana flying into the pool.

He stood at the edge, shaking his head, lips pressed together. Daciana caught the packet as he tossed it at her. Blood spilt from the pack and dribbled on her chin. Casimir turned, walking back into the cottage. Their lesson was over for the day.

Patrick arranged for Daciana to be home-schooled. On top of her occult studies, fun seemed a distant memory. Casimir needed to prove Daciana could live amongst the humans. Her thirst concerned him. A test of her control came too soon for his liking. Daciana begged to attend a dinner with Luliana. Aunt Eliza and Scarlett took Luliana to the movies, bowling, and concerts. All activities Daciana was desperate to enjoy with her sister. Casimir suggested her jealous rage channeled itself into her training. Achievements here would yield rewards, and she would be free of his guardianship.

Casimir hated the idea. To allow an untrained vampire loose in the human world was dangerous. He refused to stand by in case Daciana overstepped the mark. The humans were walking plasma packs, easy to rip open. Despite an admission of regret for biting Leticia, Daciana had not dwelled on her actions. She struck him as someone who would not have felt the same had Leticia been unknown to her. Casimir ordered Daciana to stay in the cottage. To understand her growing powers and gain a deeper insight into herself.

Daciana ruffled her hair; this was an opportunity to prove she was in control. The fading image in the mirror was a stark reminder of her cruel fate, but nothing could stop her. Aunt Eliza called from the kitchen upstairs. Waves of laughter as Luliana giggled, retelling the lame dad jokes Patrick told them. Daciana checked her image and braced herself for the first night out in months.
