Leticia was everything, more than he deserved. Her smile gave him warmth, a fuzzy feeling at the core of his soul. Patrick swept the hair back from her neck, cupping her face. He had failed once to protect her, and he would not allow this to happen again. There was no one in the world Patrick could love, no one as accepting of his flaws as Leticia. For her, he vowed to stop leaving wet towels on the floor. There would be pancakes and delicious food from the garden to nourish her. His arms would embrace her, and his body would love her for as long as they lived.

The officiant Ryan, rested his hands, crossing in front of his waist. He gave the couple a moment to share their kiss. An excited squeal marked the official moment of ‘Husband and Wife’. Luliana exclaimed their family was complete. Her applause brought the rest of the guests on board as they cheered the happy couple. Patrick and Leticia turned to take their first steps, leading the way to the party downstairs. A voice hollered, stopping everyone in their tracks. Milly bowed her head, cheeks painful and hot. Hunter wanted to share his love for Milly on this occasion.
Since the family was all together, it seemed to him appropriate and they to should marry. Patrick’s jaw hung open, and his brow furrowed. The guests took on a similar look as Hunter dragged Milly to the alter. With murmured objection, the guests retook their seats. Hunter nodded to the officiant to begin. Ryan hesitated, unsure if he should continue, but leaned in and asked for their names.
Milly listened to the over rehearsed standard speech before another interruption. Hunter wanted the traditional vows spoken in the bygone era, a tribute to the history of the building. Like the tales of old, they came together through her family. Their love echoed the tradition this estate embodied. It represented what the world had lost in its modernisation of family roles. Hunter held her firm as he repeated his vows; to have and to hold. Like the wife was a possession and the marriage certificate proof of ownership. In sickness and health, but not it seems during childbirth. To love and to cherish; this he could manage and the part Milly held onto.

Hunter tilted her chin, forcing her eyes to meet his. Milly took a shaky breath, not daring to look at her family. She loved Hunter and their two beautiful children; this was the easy part of her traditional vows. A giggle slipped out as she spoke ‘to honour and to cherish’ as Hunter leaned in to remind her to use her body for this. Ryan used the modern version, omitting the obey, but Hunter was quick to correct. He shunned the officiant, telling Milly to follow him.
As she repeated, love, honour, obey, and until death we do part, she envied Leticia. This wedding lacked the personal touch granted to her and Patrick. Milly’s green crocheted dress was not the stuff of dreams. She imagined herself in a cream, traditional dress. A long flowing skirt with elaborate embroidery. The twins, who remained with a babysitter, would, in her mind, be flower pals. Luliana and Daciana would walk them down the aisle, scattering petals. Eliza would be the one to give her away at the altar. Milly wanted to memorise vows which brought a tear to the eye.
Thin lips pressed against hers, the dream shattering. No applause accompanied the ‘man and wife’ announcement making Milly’s heart sink. Hunter hovered by her side for the rest of the evening. Cheerful conversation bypassed the couple as the focus returned to Patrick and Leticia. Eliza managed a congratulatory hug. The disappointment gave her voice a sharp edge. Patrick had no words for either. His smile hid the hurt this intrusion caused as he tended to Leticia. Hunter sat proud, chin lifted and raised his glass to any who caught his eye. Milly sank into her seat. Marrying the man she loved came at the cost of her family and the shame she must now carry.
